Guitar Effects - Compression
Watch any professional guitarist assortment of pedals - pedals to find Overdrive, lint, flangers, chorus, distortion, to name a few. One you almost always find ... and one can not wait ... is a compression pedal. Why? What does a compressor pedal to do?
In it's simplest form, a compression "squeezes" a guitar sound. The analogy of a guitar tone is composed of many a large frequency - a compression pedal and presses range addresses to match the tone. This makes the resulting sound and more consistent level.

Of course, it comes to cost - pushing the tone, dynamic range is reduced. However, the reward is a fatter tone and a more consistent level.
So Why are there so many compression pedals if all you do? Okay, for the same reason that a variety of other effects pedals - sound different from one brand to another!
The electronics inside the pedal, gain and tweeking different configurations available, the particular "style" of your desired tone (Country shining bright? O Southern rock phat?) The treatment of different frequencies - all lend the taste of the resulting tone. Like anything else, you really have to sit down and address a multitude of compression pedals to find the most suitable for reproduction.
Compression effects work well on guitar power - but can also help acoustic and bass players the ability to provide a more evenly. While you can not use a compressor pedal as its only effect is very common to be the first pedal in the chain.
