Dodge Viper
Development
The Viper was conceived as a history of taking the classic American sports car. The iconic AC Cobra was an inspiration, and the final version of the snake is confirmed by its powerful engine, minimalist design simple, muscular, aggressive style and high performance. Some saw claims to kinship the Cobra as a marketing exercise, ignoring that Carroll Shelby was heavily involved in the initial design of the Viper, and subsequent design of the Viper GTS coupe. In particular, the last (1996-2002) Viper GTS coupe took a few design elements of the Pete Brock designed Shelby Cobra Daytona. Although the proportions seem similar at first glance, the designs are quite unique. Carroll Shelby was on the development of the RT/10 and have a hand in the development of the GTS model.
The Viper was conceived in the late Studies from 1988 to Chrysler Advanced Design. The following February, Chrysler president Bob Lutz suggested to Tom Gale at Chrysler Design that the company should consider to produce a modern Cobra, and a clay model was presented to Lutz a few months later. Directed by Metalcrafters sheet, shown as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in 1989. Public reaction was so enthusiastic, that chief engineer Roy Sjoberg was carried out to develop a production vehicle.
Sjoberg 85 engineers selected for the "Viper Team" with the development in early March 1989. The team asked then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast blocks aluminum prototype based on Dodge truck V10 sports car use in May the organization of production was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Although the V8 was first used in the test mule, the V10, the car production intended use, was completed in February 1990.
Approval formal president of Chrysler, Lee Iacocca was in May 1990. A year later, Carroll Shelby piloted a preproduction car as the Pace Car in the 500 race Indianapolis. In November 1991, the car was delivered to reviewers with first shipments of retail sales from January 1992.

The first prototype was tested in January 1989. He made his debut in 1991 with pre-production models as the head coach of the Indy 500 Indianapolis, when Dodge was forced to substitute in place of the Japanese built the caution due to complaints from the United Auto Workers, and was released in January 1992 as RT/10 Roadster.
Lover part of the car was its engine. Is based on the Chrysler Design Los Angeles, who was a truck engine. The original configuration it's too heavy to use Lamborghini sports car, then owned by Chrysler Corporation, renovated cast iron block V10 Dodge Viper's recasting block and head in aluminum alloy. Some within Chrysler has estimated that the design of two-valve rod, while adequate for the purposes of trucks inappropriate for a performance car and suggested a more comprehensive redesign which included four valves per cylinder. Chrysler, however, was not sure of the costs of Viper's production and sales potential and so declined to provide the budget amendment.
The engine weighs 711 pounds (323 kg) and produces 400 hp (300 kW) at 4600 rpm and 465 lbft (630 Nm) at 3600 rpm, and thanks to the long transmission of the engine, providing fuel economy of a United States Protection Agency Environmental classification and 12 miles per U.S. gallon (20 L/100 km, 14 mpg-imp) city and 20 mpg-US (12 L/100 km, 24 mpg-imp) highway. Main was a tubular steel frame with panels of fiberglass resin transfer molding (RTM). Some small parts of the suspension (by pulling the ends and parts front wheel hubs) after the manufacturer's "first mover" mantra comes from the Dodge Dakota. He had an empty weight of £ 3284 (1,490 kg) and lacked of all modern driving aids such as traction control or ABS. Car and Driver magazine referred to this generation as "the world's largest Harley Fat Boy, "and compared it to" playing ping pong with a Louisville Slugger baseball bat. "However, performance in a straight line, which was fourth mile in 12.6 seconds and a top speed over 180 mph (290 kmh). Its big tires helped the car an average of about 1 g lateral cornering, like other elite cars of its time. However, the car was difficult to fly at high speed, especially for unskilled workers.
The car was spartan, but also inflatable lumbar support and adjustable seats. No exterior door handles, the vehicle had no side windows and roof. While a bell housing was available, was designed primarily to store vehicles inside. Side curtain fabric and transparent plastic exploited by the closures can be inserted into the door and hand screw when necessary. All these decisions have been made to reduce weight. The battery is located in the sealed chamber in the rear wheel and increase the weight of the rear and tension. The car comes with a cargo cover and video tapes about the hood assembly (hood is removable and fits easily in the trunk). In 1994, AC C was added as an option.

A model called the GTS coupe was introduced in 1996. Dubbed "double bubble" roof sections appears slightly elevated above each seat to allow the use of helmets, a return to his fate. Vipers can be seen often involved in endurance racing, road racing and drifting. The GTS, like its predecessor, was chosen as a car driver and Indy 500 in 1996.
Despite of similar appearance, the car was different enough to be considered a new model generation. [Citation needed] major changes like a redesigned engine with more power and less weight, a frame almost completely rethought that was 60 pounds (27 kg) lighter and stiffer than the torsional stiffness 25% through a computer analysis careful, a completely redesigned suspension and reduced braking distances, 1996 to 2002 Viper GTS had a lighter (about 650 pounds (290 kg)) 450 hp (340 kW) engine, which could complete the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds, 0.3 and 16 mph (26 kph) faster than its predecessor, and increased the speed of 11 mph (18 km per hour) or more. The revised suspension, stiffer chassis and aerodynamic body raised side grip of 0.98 g (9.6 m / s) although other reports indicate that the model 1992, with 1.0 g. Modern tires have improved this measure significantly. slalom races are often reach or exceed 70 mph (110 kmh). ABS brakes again failed to start, and proved to be the weak point of the car. The car's brakes poorly compared to many tests, as a "supercar comparison" of 1997 by Motor Trend in which the Viper GTS placed on top against cars like the Ferrari 550 NSX, Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, Honda and all the exercises, except braking performance. The car not only placed last, but stopping distances were significantly more than other vehicles. ABS was introduced in the production cycle, so braking performance is not necessarily better. In a comparison made Sports Car International in 2002, the Viper ACR (ABS) was compared with the 911 GT2 at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Both cars are very capable and fast on the test track, but the Viper was more difficult to drive, and the system Braking has been blamed for just the difference in lap times (about GT2: 2 minutes, the CAB: 2:04) between the two cars.
With performance up to the day came the inclusion of some of the "luxuries" the car was unprecedented. dual front airbags were added to the list of vehicle safety equipment in the GTS in 1996 and 1997 in the RT/10 as mandated by the government. The car was also exported to Europe, where it was renamed the Chrysler and sold under the brand from 1997 to 2003. European models have a detuned version of the Viper V10.
During first six years of production almost 10,000 Vipers were sold. Minor developments, including new tires 18 "diameter tires were introduced in the 1999 model. at the end of this lightweight hypereutectic pistons and an improved exhaust system, side exhaust was abandoned mid-production 1996 years RT/10, the whole production had Viper GTS Coupe rear exhaust. 1999 saw the introduction of the package Cognac Connolly Leather interior. Continue with refinement, the APA has been introduced in 2001. In 2002, the final production of the second generation took place with the release of 360 commemorative "Final Edition" models. These models were painted red with white stripes, paying tribute to famous winning cars Oreca racing. The RT/10 was replaced by the SRT-10 GTS in 2003 and was replaced in 2005 by the SRT-10 Coupe.

Dodge Viper underwent a major revision in 2003, courtesy of DaimlerChrysler's Street and Racing Technology Group. The new Viper SRT-10, which replaced the GTS and the RT/10 redraw largely a strong body angle. engine displacement was enlarged to 505 cubic inches (8.3 L), with other improvements, combined with Production increased to 500 hp (370 kW) and 525 lbft (712 Nm). With the power increases, the weight was reduced by 500 pounds (230 kg) range. The chassis has been improved as well. Became more rigid and weighs about 80 pounds (36 kg) less than the previous model. A parts lighter and stronger than expected, but was abandoned because of cost (Provided that the suspension were used in the Hennessey Viper Venom 1000 Twin Turbo.) The original model was a convertible. In 2004, Dodge introduced a limited edition Mamba package. Mamba edition cars also black interior with red stitching and seat and saw his U.S. $ MSRP 3000. 200 Mambas were produced.
The Viper SRT-10 Coupe was introduced in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show as a 2006 model. It shares most of its body panels with the convertible, but it has its competitive side and FIFA's later style. The coupe is very similar to the previous Viper GTS and retains as a "double bubble" roof of the original with the taillights of the original GTS, the GTS while offering the original paint scheme blue with white stripes on initial implementation of the cars the first edition as a tribute to the original Viper coupe added. The engine is certified to produce 510 SAE horsepower (380 kW) and 535 lbft (725 Nm). Unlike the original cut, the chassis has not changed. This makes it heavier than the convertible coupe and a bit slower to accelerate. Handling and high speed performance were improved by more rigid chassis coupé, reducing resistance and increasing support.
N ° 2007 model Vipers occurred. In contrast, Chrysler decided to give the 2006 model, battery life while preparing the updated 2008 model.

In 2008, with the introduction of 510 in the University of California (8.4 L) V10 produces 600 horsepower Viper (450 kW) at 6000 rpm and 560 lbft (760 Nm) at 5100 rpm, and also received a higher flow heads with bigger valves, Mechadyne wedging cam variable valve timing in the lobes exhaust cam, and dual electronic throttle body. The speed limit has been able to increase by 300 rpm due to the increased stability of the organ distribution both new camshaft profiles and valve springs. Motor development has been done with outside help from McLaren Automotive and Ricardo Consulting Engineers. electronic control engine has been developed by Continental AG, the controller can control the position of the crankshaft and cylinder up to six times during each shot and is 10 times more power processing compared to the previous section.
Out of the engine changes are less extreme. Tremec T56 transmission has been replaced by a new Tremec TR6060 now has three synchronized gears and first twice higher ratios. The rear axle Dana M44-4 from the 2003-2006 model now has a ViscoLok GKN sensitive limited slip differential at the rate that greatly helps to get the tires grip under acceleration. Another performance improvement was the elimination of run-flat tires, the new Michelin Tire Pilot Sport 2 increased driver feedback and adherence and, together with a revised suspension (springs, sway bars and shock valves) has the snake made more neutral cornering.
Changes in the 2008 model year cars have been enough to make Chrysler separately the first SRT-10, and model 2008 that became known as Gen IV, [citation needed], just in time for the launch of Chevrolet 638 hp (476 kW) Corvette ZR1. Another notable change is the redesign of the system escape, the previous third generation Vipers had their exhaust crossover under the seats, resulting in a large amount of heat entering the cabin this was done initially to help improve car exhaust note, as the first two generations of Viper, which had not crossed, have been criticized for poor exhaust note. For 2008, the Viper exhaust will utilize a new exhaust system has no crossover, reducing the heat entering the cockpit.
The electrical system has been Completely redesigned for 2008. The modifications include a 180-amp alternator, two electric fans, electronic throttle, and completely new system Venom engine management. CAN bus architecture has been closely linked with legacy systems to facilitate compliance. The fuel system has been enhanced to include a more powerful fuel pump and filtration system.
Car and Driver recently tested the car and has a time of 0-60 mph (97 km / h) 3.5 seconds a 0 to 100 mph (160 kph) time of 7.6 seconds and a quarter mile time of 11.5 seconds at 126 mph (203 kmh). Dodge claims the top speed is 197 mph (317 km / H) and 202 mph (325 kmh) for the Roadster and Coupé, respectively. Car and Driver also tested the performance monitoring of the snake, and run fast 3 minutes around the turn of Virginia International Raceway. The Viper is the time despite the heat, was faster than the Corvette Z06, Ford GT, Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 GT3 the Audi R8, and other such cars. According to Car and Driver and Motor Trend, the car is a bit tight the suspension and differential settings gave a new twist as acute as before with even better control, feedback and response.
On November 4, 2009, Dodge brand vehicles Chairman and CEO, Ralph Gilles, announced that the Viper would end production in the summer of 2010. A new car will arrive in 2012 to replace the current Viper, but it is unclear whether the new car will be called Viper.
On February 10, 2010, Dodge began accepting orders for the Viper SRT10 "Final Edition" models. Only 32 of these units will be produced. "Final Edition" cars carried special code compilation, AXZ "and will be the last of the fourth generation of cars Viper. "Final Edition" will be available in Viper SRT10 coupe and convertible configurations. The price of this special limited offer of production has not been set free.

There were no engine modifications, if the numbers remain at 600 hp (450 kW) and 560 lbft (760 Nm) than the car base. The CAB has an advantage of the road. The ACR is similar to the Mopar Dodge Viper that appears in various auto shows. Weight is also decreased by nearly 80 pounds (36 kg) through the "Hardcore Package" which deletes radio, speakers, amplifier, trunk carpet, hood carpet, and tire inflation. Its aerodynamic produce 1000 pounds (4.4 kN) of down force at 150 mph (240 kph), about 10 times the strength of support based on Viper SRT-10 can occur at the same speed. No updates were given Within the exception of the addition of a timer-activated lighthouse professional.
The Viper ACR is built next to the TRS-10 standard plant Conner Avenue in Detroit. The aerodynamic components are manufactured and assembled in the vehicle by the prefix Corporation located in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Based on the Viper GTS, the GTS-R was released in late 1995 as an attempt to demonstrate the ability of the Viper design worldwide, although the racing programs focusing mainly on Europe. The use of these components such as the production engine block, cylinder heads and crankshaft, Dodge engineers were able to extract up to 750 hp (559 kW) usually produces 450 hp (336 kW) second generation 8.0 L V10 engine. The chassis has been redesigned or by the British sports manufacturer Reynard Motorsport's Special Projects Division Engineer Chief Paul Brown, then that they met and Oreca to keep the race cars.
The car made its competition debut in the 1996 24 Hours of Daytona Racing with Canaska, followed by Oreca in the BPR Global GT Series. Oreca would have more success with the Viper, winning the FIA GT Championship three times, the 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins three times, and an overall victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2000.
Between 1999 and 2002, won the 24 Hours Zakspeed Nrburgring three times, with the C15 and C36 Viper chassis. In a attempt to circumvent the rules 24, 2003 in which the GTS-R was given to admitting that "Chrysler Viper 90 liters 1,350 kg 2 x 30.8 mm (flange)", Zakspeed Dodge Viper returned. In pit stops, which completed more than 90 liters of fuel have been punished on two occasions and finished fifth on the right track with 134 laps. Then called to DMSB and were disqualified in total, with "Wertungsausschluss (excluding classified) for the Chrysler Viper. Since the rules limited engine capacity to 6200 cc in 2005, became Zakspeed V8 engine in this size.
After the end of the official factory support the program in 2001, the Vipers have been used by private teams with great success. Viper GTS-R has continued competition even be used in 2007.
