When I was your age, in 1976, worked all summer to develop an ES-335, then I changed to a strong bridge - a total price of $ 800. I changed into something else when I was in college, which was a big mistake because today, Gibson cost me $ 3000 + used to replace, if I could find one. Ironically, the Epi Les Paul is probably the best of both again today. They are as good as the equivalent. Gibson Les Paul at a fraction of the price. But unfortunately, if you want something that will hold its value or appreciate over time - buy the Gibson. He also had a guitar Ibanez jazz great that I exchanged ... it was better than all the Gibsons .. a beautiful flamed maple archtop .. but I'm less than you paid for it when I changed. Moral history ... Gibson retain their value and / or increase over time. Although no one wants them (Marauders, L6-S, etc), you can get your money ... and if they become popular, for one because ... attention. Epiphone, Ibanez, Yamaha ... all great guitars, but very few people appreciate the value, if any. The same is true of things Fender. "Real" Fender mount - TexMex / Escudero / etc does not work. I have a G & L (Leo Fender company follows) F-100 is an amazing guitar ... and not worth a penny more than you paid 25 years ago. Why? Because people want "real" Strats - period. The Gandl is technically 20 miles ahead from the start, however, is worth a fraction of today's prices. Why? Because no one plays the famous. It is a curiosity. For a Epi Les Paul to take off in value, two things must happen --- Several key players start to play ... and supply should decrease. Nothing you do will increase in value of 500,000, no matter how good it is. A "real" Les Paul, which are 1500 or 15000 ... . Yes, I have a better idea - go to a good local guitar shop that services of the players in your area. You can find a murderer in exchange for a player who just warm room stock market (like the 335 or gold top I foolishly traded). Not Just consider the new instruments, not I can buy newer. I like the idea of another good player had a guitar and gigged with it is - gives soul. It should help.
