1957 was a great year for Gibson. After several years of experimentation, the company took decision to change the pills to its flagship solidbody electric guitar, Les Paul, P90 single coil "PAF" humbuckers.
Humbucker were revolutionary. By combining both pickups wound in different directions, Gibson found that can remove noise and 60-cycle hum of power or lights, while the increase of the crisis and the roar of the guitar. More volume of your music, minus the volume of noise. Win-win.
Humbucker pickups have been a crucial step in his electric guitar. Although Jimi Hendrix finally master the simple distortion settlement, the concept of distortion of the music really began with Clapton playing a 1960 Les Paul with humbuckers with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker cream.
So no doubt the reason that 1957 was a great year for Les Paul, and why the company keeps repeating guitars to the specifications of this year.
There are many subtle differences between the '57, '56, '59 and reissues. Subtle changes in the neck, for example. They feel the same as Gibson has been exploring and experimenting to see what they could discover. Some of these experiences (as humbuckers) taken from forest fires etc. Others (like the Gibson SG, which the company originally seen as a refinement of the Les Paul) are not.
I could write a lot about how each of these different feeling neck, but when you talk about subtle changes in nuance, honestly, all that matters is how it feels in your hand. You have to pick up guitars and play. To call the neck 57 in a more or less thicker than the neck in 56 would be a bit misleading. They are different. The two big ones.
Gibson did a great job with these reissues exceptional. In this case, the glossy black finish looks like a new guitar, but he plays like the kind of machine launched vintage rock and deservedly popular. If this is what you want, then this is the guitar for you.
