Epiphone Dobro Hound Dog
Dobro Guitar Music - humble beginnings and a History of the influences of Sonic
Any bluegrass fan will tell you that there is nothing like the sound of a dobro. It seems a guitar, plays like a steel guitar and adds a unique dimension to a song. Here we will look at the beginning of the design and history of use in recording and interpretation.
John Dopyera invented the resonator guitar throughout the 1920s based on a request by the steel guitar great George Beauchamp. Together they formed the National String Instrument Corporation and manufactured them under one brand National.
Dopyera national left in 1928 and formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company with three brothers. The name "Dobro" is a contraction of "Dopyera brothers." It also means "good" in the Slovak language. The word "Dobro" now used in reference to any resonator guitar, regardless of manufacturer.
The Dobro was introduced to country music in the 1930s by Shy Oswald's brother while playing with Roy Acuff and the Smoky Mountain Boys. In this genre, the Dobro steel guitar has largely replaced the dobro. However, even is used today, only less so.
Around this same time period, Dobros were used by blues musicians like Bukka White and the legendary Bo Carter. This was mainly in the southern part of the United States around Louisiana and Mississippi Deltas. Most guitar players were using acoustics, but electricity is scarce in larger venues and dobro was stronger, so is the choice of live blues artists.
This was significant from the dobro is normally played as an instrument of a laptop. These blues musicians began to play like standard guitars, upright. Due to the high action of the chains, they all used either a slide or bottleneck in the fret board. The sound was nice and still heard Today in the genre of Southern blues.
In mid-1950, a guy named Josh Graves introduced the dobro bluegrass music. The effect was great and the music became a staple of bluegrass dobro overnight. Graves had been playing with Flatt & Scruggs at the time. Earl Scruggs took three finger picking style the banjo and the dobro applied. That is how they play today with a notable exception in Tut Taylor, who used a flat peak.
As you can see, the dobro is an American creation all with roots in the southern United States. The inventor, John Dopyera, was an immigrant but he made his mark in the music world with this instrument. First production with George Beauchamp, then with his brothers and coined the name "dobro".
Beauchamp tried to usurp the name, but after many legal disputes, Dopyera took control of the company Beauchamp. The Gibson Guitar Company acquired the right to make the dobro in 1993, declaring that retained the rights to the brand name "Dobro." Gibson and manufactures several models under the Dobro name, some of the cheaper models and a line Hound Dog as Epiphone.
Dobro is sweet music to your ears and the instruments are a delight for the eyes. Despite being played today, it's best to listen to the great players of the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
